about-face（初級）

“The move is an about-face for a district that, since the pandemic, has focused on bringing technology into the classroom.”

この動きは、パンデミック以来テクノロジーを教室に取り入れることに注力してきた学区にとって、方針の大転換だ。

意味

180度の方向転換、前言撤回、という意味です。もともと軍隊用語で「後ろを向け」という命令から来ており、転じて方針や意見が正反対に変わる場面で使われます。

例文

rash（中級）

意味

軽率な、無謀な、という意味の形容詞です。十分に考えずに行動する、または判断するというニュアンスがあります。名詞では「発疹」という全く異なる意味もあります。

throw the baby out with the bathwater（上級）

学校でのスクリーンタイムを急いで広く禁止するのは、良いものまで一緒に捨ててしまうようなものだ。

意味

問題を解決しようとして、価値あるものまで一緒に捨ててしまう、という意味の慣用表現です。お風呂の水を捨てるときに赤ちゃんまで流してしまうというイメージから来ています。過剰反応や行き過ぎた対策を批判する文脈でよく使われます。

例文

  • Canceling the whole program because of one failure would be throwing the baby out with the bathwater.（一つの失敗でプログラム全体を中止するのは、良いものまで一緒に捨ててしまうことになる。）
