on the brink of（初級）

“Decades of environmental damage have left many West Coast salmon runs on the brink of extinction.”
数十年にわたる環境破壊により、西海岸の多くのサーモンの群れは絶滅の瀬戸際に立たされている。

意味

〜の瀬戸際に、〜の直前に、という意味です。brink はもともと崖や水際の端を意味し、「ギリギリのところ」というニュアンスがあります。危機・崩壊・成功など、重大な局面の直前を表す場面で使われます。

例文

The company was on the brink of bankruptcy when it found new investors.（新しい投資家を見つけたとき、会社は倒産の瀬戸際にあった。）
She was on the brink of giving up when things finally turned around.（状況がようやく好転したとき、彼女はあきらめる寸前だった。）

“These habitat projects are the best bang for our buck right now.”
これらの生息地プロジェクトは、今のところ最もコストパフォーマンスの高い取り組みだ。

意味

コストパフォーマンス、費用対効果、という意味の口語表現です。支払ったお金（buck）に対してどれだけの価値（bang）が得られるか、というイメージです。日常会話でもよく使われます。

例文

For the price, this hotel gives you the best bang for your buck.（この値段で、このホテルは最高のコストパフォーマンスを提供してくれる。）
When buying a used car, make sure you’re getting the best bang for your buck.（中古車を買うときは、費用対効果をしっかり考えて。）

“My great-grandfather, he fished these waters, and he was able to eke out a moderate living.”
私の曾祖父はこの海で漁をし、なんとか普通の生活を送ることができた。

意味

乏しい資源や収入でなんとか〜を維持する・確保する、という意味です。苦労しながらも少しずつ何かを得るイメージで、eke out a living（なんとか生計を立てる）という形でよく使われます。

例文

Many families in the area eke out a living on small farms.（その地域の多くの家族は小さな農場でなんとか生計を立てている。）
He eked out a victory in the final seconds of the game.（彼は試合終了間際にかろうじて勝利をつかんだ。）
