go around（初級）

“When there was enough food to go around, my mother’s mother would feed not only her kids but their friends.”

全員に行き渡るだけの食事があるときは、祖母は自分の子どもたちだけでなく、その友人たちにも食事を与えた。

意味

全員に行き渡る、十分な数・量がある、という意味です。「enough to go around」の形でよく使われます。また「回る・広まる」という意味でも使われます（a rumor going around など）。

例文

  • There are enough chairs for everyone to go around.（全員に行き渡るだけの椅子がある。）
  • Is there enough pizza to go around?（ピザは全員分ありますか？）

change of heart（中級）

気持ちの変化——何年も後、アメリカで生活し教鞭をとる大人になって、私は違う見方をするようになった。

意味

心境の変化、気持ちが変わること、という意味の表現です。以前とは反対の立場や意見になるほどの大きな変化を表し、ポジティブ・ネガティブどちらにも使えます。

  • She had a change of heart and decided to stay.（彼女は気持ちが変わって、残ることに決めた。）
  • His change of heart surprised everyone on the team.（彼の心境の変化はチーム全員を驚かせた。）

deter（上級）

“Nothing would deter her from being kind to others: ‘I would do it again and again.’”

何も彼女が他者に親切にすることを妨げることはできないでしょう。「何度でもやり直します」と彼女は言った。

意味

〜を思いとどまらせる・妨げる、という意味の動詞です。恐怖・困難・罰則などが人の行動を抑止するニュアンスがあります。deter someone from doing の形でよく使われます。

例文

  • The rain didn’t deter them from going on the hike.（雨も彼らのハイキングを止めることはできなかった。）
  • Stricter laws may deter people from speeding.（より厳しい法律は、スピード違反を思いとどまらせるかもしれない。）
