eye-popping（初級）

“Reading gains weren’t quite as eye-popping, but they were gains nonetheless.”

読解力の向上は目を見張るほどではなかったが、それでも向上はしていた。

意味

目を見張るような・驚くほど印象的な、という意味の形容詞です。良い意味での驚きに使うことが多く、数字・成果・デザインなど視覚的にインパクトのあるものを表す場面でよく登場します。

例文

  • The company posted eye-popping profits this quarter.（その会社は今四半期に目を見張る利益を計上した。）
  • The view from the top of the mountain was eye-popping.（山頂からの景色は息をのむほどだった。）

albeit（中級）

“There are signs that the nation’s learning recession may be turning around, albeit slowly.”

国の学力低下が、ゆっくりではあるが、好転しつつある兆しがある。

意味

〜ではあるが・〜とはいえ、という意味の接続詞です。although と似ていますが、albeit は主に形容詞・副詞・前置詞句の前に置いて、前の内容を部分的に認めながら限定するときに使います。やや格式的でライティングで差がつく表現です。

例文

  • The project was a success, albeit an expensive one.（プロジェクトは成功したが、費用がかかるものだった。）
  • She agreed to help, albeit reluctantly.（彼女は、気が乗らないながらも助けることに同意した。）

anomalous（上級）

“The decline that began around 2013 appears more striking and anomalous.”

2013年頃に始まった低下は、より顕著で異常なものに見える。

意味

通常とは異なる・異常な・規則から外れた、という意味の形容詞です。名詞形はanomaly（異常・例外）です。科学・データ分析・ニュースで頻出し、「普通ではないが悪いとは限らない」という客観的なニュアンスがあります。

例文

  • The unusually warm winter was anomalous for this region.（例年にない暖かい冬は、この地域では異常だった。）
  • Scientists found an anomalous reading in the data that couldn’t be explained.（科学者たちはデータの中に説明できない異常な値を見つけた。）
