a sure thing（初級）

“It’s as close to a sure thing as the ESC’s had in years.”

これは何年ものユーロビジョンの中で、最も確実な優勝候補に近い。

意味

確実なこと・間違いのないこと、という意味のフレーズです。勝者・結果・成功がほぼ確実な場面で使われます。「ほぼ確実だが100%ではない」というニュアンスを含む場合もあります。

perennial（中級）

意味

永続的な・毎回繰り返す・定番の、という意味の形容詞です。もともとは植物学で「多年草」を指す言葉で、「毎年繰り返される」というイメージから転じて「おなじみの・いつもの」という意味で使われます。

penultimate（上級）

意味

最後から2番目の、という意味の形容詞です。ultimate（最後の・究極の）のpen-（ほぼ・もう少し）がついた形で、「もう一歩で最後」というニュアンスがあります。文章・リスト・順位など順序を語る文脈でよく使われます。
