surefire（初級）

“Using flowers, trees and shrubs that have existed in North America for millennia is a surefire way to turn your space into a wildlife magnet.”

数千年にわたり北米に存在してきた花・木・低木を使うことは、自分のスペースを野生生物の集まる場所にするための確実な方法だ。

意味

確実に効果がある・間違いない、という意味の形容詞です。sure（確かな）とfire（発砲する）を組み合わせた表現で、「必ず当たる銃」のイメージから「絶対に成功する」というニュアンスになりました。surefire method（確実な方法）、surefire hit（確実なヒット）の形でよく使われます。

take a toll（中級）

意味

〜に打撃を与える・悪影響を及ぼす、という意味の表現です。toll はもともと通行料のことで、「代償を払わせる」というイメージから「悪影響が蓄積する」というニュアンスになりました。take a toll on 〜 の形でよく使われます。

follow suit（上級）

ディアスは10年以上在来植物で庭づくりをしており、5人の近所の人たちが彼女の例に倣った。

意味

例に倣う・同じことをする、という意味の表現です。トランプカードの「スーツ（suit）を合わせる」が語源で、他の人の行動に続く・真似をするというニュアンスがあります。
