supplement（初級）

“The technology should supplement learning, not replace it.”

テクノロジーは学習を補うものであるべきで、置き換えるものであってはならない。

意味

補う・補足する・追加する、という意味の動詞・名詞です。何かを完全に置き換えるのではなく、既存のものに加えてより充実させるというニュアンスがあります。サプリメント（supplement）という言葉は栄養補助食品という意味でもなじみがありますが、動詞としての使い方も重要です。

例文

  • She supplements her income by freelancing on weekends.（彼女は週末にフリーランスの仕事をして収入を補っている。）
  • The app is designed to supplement, not replace, classroom instruction.（そのアプリは授業を補助するものであり、代替するものではない。）

crutch（中級）

“I found that I was using it more as a crutch instead of actually helping. So that was one of the telltale signs that I should stop using it.”

実際に役立てるというより、頼り切っていると気づいた。それがやめるべきサインだった。

意味

松葉杖、という字義から転じて、頼り切っているもの・なければ機能しないもの、という意味です。本来は自力でできることを、それに頼ることで自分の能力が育たないという含みがあります。

  • He realized he was using alcohol as a crutch to deal with stress.（彼はストレス対処にアルコールを頼り切っていると気づいた。）

ambivalence（上級）

意味

相反する感情が同時に存在する状態・どちらとも決めかねる気持ち、という意味の名詞です。形容詞はambivalent（どちらともとれる・態度が定まらない）。好きでも嫌いでもある、賛成でも反対でもあるという複雑な心境を一言で表せます。

例文

  • She felt ambivalence about moving abroad — excited but also anxious.（彼女は海外移住について、ワクワクしながらも不安という複雑な気持ちを抱いていた。）
  • His ambivalence about the new job offer made it hard to make a decision.（新しい仕事のオファーへの複雑な感情が、決断を難しくしていた。）
