culprit（初級）

“New research from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York finds that the culprit may be something else: remote work.”

ニューヨーク連邦準備銀行の新しい研究によると、原因は別のところにあるかもしれない。リモートワークだ。

意味

原因・元凶・犯人、という意味の名詞です。もともとは法律用語で「被疑者」を意味しましたが、転じて問題や悪い結果の「原因・元凶」を表すのに広く使われます。

plummet（中級）

意味

急落する・急速に落ちる、という意味の動詞です。値段・数値・人気・気温などが短期間で大幅に下がる場合に使います。dwindle（じわじわ減る）とは異なり、急激な落下のイメージがあります。

divergence（上級）

AIへの露出度は、2022〜24年の失業率の乖離を説明しなかった。

意味

分岐・乖離・差の広がり、という意味の名詞です。もともと数学や物理学の用語で、二つのものが異なる方向に広がっていく様子を表します。意見・傾向・数値などが離れていく状況を指します。反対はconvergence（収束）です。

例文

  • There’s a growing divergence between the rich and the poor in this country.（この国では富裕層と貧困層の乖離が拡大している。）
