fish out of water（初級）

“A hapless fish out of water she imported from the U.S. shortly after his college graduation.”

大学卒業直後にアメリカから連れてきた、場違いで哀れな人物。

意味

慣れない環境・不慣れな状況に置かれた人、という意味の慣用表現です。水から出た魚のように、本来の居場所ではない場所でぎこちなくしている状態を表します。

例文

  • Moving to a new country made her feel like a fish out of water at first.（新しい国への引っ越しで、最初は彼女は場違いな感じがした。）
  • As the only engineer at the art exhibition, he felt like a fish out of water.（美術展に来た唯一のエンジニアとして、彼は場違いに感じた。）

on the cusp of（中級）

バージニアの田舎で大人になる直前の幸福な時代が、遠く離れた大洋の向こうの紛争によって取り返しのつかない形で打ち砕かれた3人の主人公たち。

意味

〜の直前に・〜のまさに境目に、という意味の表現です。cusp はもともと星占いで星座が切り替わる境目を指し、転じて「何かが始まろうとしているギリギリの瞬間」を表します。

例文

  • The company is on the cusp of a major breakthrough.（その会社は大きな突破口を開こうとしている。）
  • She is on the cusp of graduating — just one more exam to go.（彼女は卒業直前だ。残りはあと一つの試験だけ。）

riven（上級）

感情的な断層と時間そのものによって引き裂かれながらも、依然として活力があり、複雑で、必要とされている、壊れた家族の肖像が浮かび上がる。

意味

引き裂かれた・深く分断された、という意味の形容詞です。rive（割る・引き裂く）の過去分詞形で、やや文語的・文学的な表現です。家族・社会・組織が深く対立・分断されている状態を描写するのに使われます。

例文

  • The country was riven by political divisions after the election.（選挙後、その国は政治的分断によって引き裂かれた。）
